Heigh-Hoh! It’s off to scout camp they went …
Back in the 1970s, that is. Fair Haven Boy Scouts are wrapping up their return to camp at Forestburgh, NY after a two-year COVID-inspired hiatus and they’re soaking up not only the heat wave, but a lot of make-up time and tradition.
Summer scout camp at Forestburgh is a time-honored rite of passage in Fair Haven and beyond. We were reminded of that with this photo of Fair Haven Boy Scout Troop # 125, same as those there now, getting set to embark on their trip in 1976, courtesy of one of the, dare-we-say, old time scout, Frank Boesch.
Boesch tells us that he found out after posting this snapshot back in time nearly 10 years ago that at least nine of these scouts went on to become Eagle Scouts. Now, that’s a high, not heigh … ho and off they went!
The troop number was the same, the uniforms a bit different. Smiles are in check, enthusiasm and camaraderie are all packed into this classic camp launch photo at the same meet-and-ride spot — Knollwood School parking lot. Now that’s a summer tradition home … run.
Nothing quite like seeing the connection from the past to the present and knowing that some things never change — all the good little big things.
Now, what exactly is going on in this pic, besides the obvious? We know that the Troop #125 of today has concocted some fancy feasts over that campfire. What was the favorite back in ’76? Greatest 70s camp adventure? And who knows these happy campers?
