From class flirts to council members. That’s the path on which life has taken Fair Haven’s newly-elected Borough Council members Meg Chrisner-Keefe and Mike McCue.

The Fair Haven-raised political team just made history in the borough with a break in the longtime Republican stronghold on the governing body. But, political parties aside, they go back a long way.

Schooled together in Fair Haven and at RFH, the two had something in common in a team-like way even back in the 90s. They were dubbed Class Flirts in the 1998 Knollwood School Yearbook.

Both left Fair Haven after graduating from high school. Now, they’re back with their own families; and, as they said in the debate, hoping to keep generations’ worth of Fair Haven-rooted people in their hometown as elected officials.

With all council candidates citing that political affiliation in local governing is largely inconsequential, Chrisner-Keefe named Republican Councilwoman Betsy Koch, her former teacher at Knollwood, the person she most admired in local politics.

She said she’d like to see far fewer instances of seeing the RFH Senior Lives Here signs quickly replaced by For Sale signs.

So, the Retro Pic of the Day is a copy of the class flirts turned politicians’ photo in the yearbook. It serves as a little reminder that hometown ties are ones that bind, especially when it comes to the Rumson-Fair Haven area.
