Prosecutor: Young Monmouth County Man Charged with Attempted Murder in Shooting

A young Monmouth County man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and related weapons charges stemming from a Sunday shooting incident in Asbury Park, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni said.

Trey Lentz, 21, of Asbury Park, was charged with first-degree attempted murder, after allegedly shooting a 24-year old man, also from Asbury Park. Lentz was also charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and obstruction.

At 1:10 p.m. on Sunday, Neptune Township and Asbury Park police responded to the area of 48 Ridge Avenue in Asbury for shots fired. Officers arrived and learned that the victim, a 24-year old man, had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was already in a car that was being driven to the hospital by his friends.

Officers then escorted the car to the hospital and ensured that the victim received medical attention. The victim received treatment for his injuries at a local hospital where he remains in stable condition.

An investigation was immediately launched by the Asbury Park Police Department and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. Shortly thereafter, officers from the Asbury Park Police Department and Monmouth County Sherriff’s Office apprehended Lentz in the area of 48 Ridge Avenue in Asbury Park after he had climbed out of a window and was attempting to flee.

Lentz remains detained in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, Freehold. He is scheduled today to be formally served with the charges against him at his initial appearance in Freehold.
