A 38-year-old man who was found guilty of stabbing a relative in their Middletown home in 2023 has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago announced on Tuesday.

The man, Timothy J. Sauers, of Middletown, was sentenced on Thursday, Feb. 20, by Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Paul X. Escandon, having pleaded guilty in January to one count of first-degree attempted murder in connection with the 2023 incident.
Sauers must serve a minimum of 85 percent of that sentence before the possibility of parole, in accordance with New Jersey’s No Early Release Act (NERA). Under the terms of the plea, Sauers will have no further contact with the victim and cannot return to the scene where the crime took place.
The case background …
On July 5, 2023, Middletown police were called to a residence on Hillside Street on a report of a domestic disturbance.
Upon arrival, the officers found a victim suffering from a single stab wound to the neck. The victim and another resident, who stepped in to stop the attack, were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The victim’s two minor grandchildren were present at the time of the stabbing, but were unharmed.
An investigation by members of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau and the Middletown Township Police Department determined Sauers was responsible for the stabbing.
