A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a June motor vehicle collision with pedestrians that left two victims injured, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced.
Michael J. Spivak, 30, of Belmar, was arrested by the Belmar Police Department and charged with: one count of second-degree aggravated assault, two counts of third-degree endangering an injured victim, two counts of third-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of fourth-degree assault by auto.
The charges stem from an incident at 1:28 a.m. on June 1. Spivak allegedly left the scene of motor vehicle collision with during which male and female pedestrians were injured.
The collision occurred on E Street in the area of 15th Avenue in Belmar. When police arrived on the scene, they found the victims who had sustained injuries from a vehicle that had fled the scene. The male’s injuries were not life-threatening, but the female’s were serious with her lower body crushed by the Cadillac Escalade that Spivak was driving.
The case was a joint investigation with the Belmar Police Department, Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Spring Lake Police Department. Law enforcement officials during the initial investigation were able to identify the vehicle and driver within 36 hours of the collision. An extensive criminal investigation continued and led to the charges based on the actions of the driver and the serious injuries sustained by the victims.
