In Memoriam: Longtime Rumsonite, Former Rumson Country Day Nurse, Joan Nixon, 86

Longtime Rumsonite Joan Ann Nixon passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 12 with her family by her side. She was 86.

Born on July 11, 1938 in Jersey City to the late John and Winifred Lowenberg, Joan grew up on Cator Avenue in Jersey City and went to Snyder High School. She went on to study nursing at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia.

“After nursing school, Joan married her husband of 65 years, Robert Nixon, and took a job as an OR nurse at Monmouth Medical Center. They moved to Rumson in 1960 where they lived and raised their two children, Jeffrey and Carabeth.

“Joan worked for Dr. Rothenberg as a nurse and then went on to become the school nurse at Rumson Country Day School. She was active at the Tower Hill Presbyterian Church and the Rumson Presbyterian Church. Joan went back to school at age 50 for her Bachelor of Arts degree graduated Summa Cum Laude from Brookdale. She then went further on to receive a Master’s from Kean University. Joan enjoyed a wonderful retirement taking care of her children and grandchildren. Joan was the world’s greatest babysitter for her four grandchildren. She loved every minute with them and took on the role of Girl Scout Leader for them with enthusiasm.

“She was an outgoing soul who loved to talk the ears off of perfect strangers and enjoyed sending encouraging articles she had in her extensive library of solid wisdom to everyone she met. Joan’s many talents and skills added greatly to other people’s lives. Joan had so many wonderful friends she loved very much. She loved spending time in Stone Harbor and Cape May with her family in the summers. Her compassion and genuine love for others sustained her …

“Joan had a kind and generous heart and dedicated her life to helping and supporting her family and friends and she will be missed terribly.”
