Former longtime Little Silver resident, William “Billy” Ryan, more recently of Red Bank, passed away on Oct. 19 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was 77.
Born in Newark to William E. and Lorraine (nee Porter) Ryan Jr., Billy grew up in Chatham.
After winning a state championship in soccer in high school, he got a scholarship to play at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA. He also played some semi-professional games after college.
At Moravian, Billy served as co-captain of the soccer team, became the first member of his family to earn a college degree, and met the love of his life, Susan Rost.
After graduation, he served in the New Jersey National Guard, married Susie and settled in Monmouth County, where he served as a senior sales representative for the Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company.
Moving from Matawan to Little Silver in 1973, he went out on his own shortly thereafter and started to acquire local Independent Insurance Agencies.
In 1977, he founded the Compton-Snyder Agency in the Belford section of Middletown and then joined McCue Captains Agency in Little Silver in 2013.
“Billy made his best and closest lifelong friends in the insurance industry, where he served on various boards and committees within the Independent Agents of Monmouth County and New Jersey throughout his career. “
He is survived by: his beloved wife of 53 years, Susan Ryan; his son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Erica Ryan, of Little Silver; his daughter and son-in-law. Abbie and Michael Loughran, of Shrewsbury; his grandson, Ryan, and granddaughters Jordan and Samantha.
A visitation will take place on Friday, Oct. 25, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Thompson Memorial Home in Red Bank.
