She may live far away in Georgia now, but Fair Haven will always be home to Sonia Reevey. The matriarch of the Reevey family, roots set in the borough, has always honored her hometown by volunteering and just plain being a great neighbor, always with warmth for the love of Fair Haven and a smile.
So, now Fair Haven has honored her right back by literally giving Sonia Reevey her due with a day. In an unassuming ceremony at Fisk Chapel, Reevey’s longtime church and historic fixture, officials honored her with a proclamation, citing her myriad contributions to the borough and declaring Aug. 25 Sonia Reevey Day.
In addition to raising her family in Fair Haven, Reevey, over the years, has volunteered in Fair Haven for decades in various capacities: the borough’s Zoning Board, Recreation Commission, senior group and Be A Good Neighbor Committee. She was also an election poll worker for more than 40 years.
And on Memorial Day every year, it’s a given that Reevey graces the ceremony with the tradition of her a cappella rendition of My Buddy. In fact, Georgia didn’t keep her from this year’s Memorial Day back home in Fair Haven or the song. She always keeps Fair Haven on her mind and in her heart. Fair Haven holds her close as well.
Now, Sonia Reevey has her day and while a proclamation is the paper that says so, that day is not done. It has just begun. From now on, every Aug. 25, Fair Haven “extends its deep appreciation and gratitude to Sonia Reevey for her many years of selfless public service and wishes her many years of health and happiness.”
