It’s not every day that heaven freezes over, but it happened over the weekend when the Navesink River’s tide stayed put with the first full river freeze in decades.
The slice of Rumson-Fair Haven area heaven and habit became an iceberg town unto itself. And gliding has been the mode of river heaven transportation and recreation since.
Classic ice boating reprise aside, the glassy river became a skating, dog-walking, bike-riding, hockey-playing, sleigh-towing, pleasure-walking ice rink for all in the area. Call it a heavenly freeze frame.
After all, who wouldn’t want to be frozen in that sort of time — river time? Glide into the scene and get a glimpse of river heaven frozen over (by clicking on one photo and scrolling), courtesy of artist and Fair Havenite Susan Culbert, who captured the cold with local warmth …
The temperatures in the area have climbed up to downright balmy double-digits this week. While some thaw has budged the freeze, the scene remains. Check out the forecast through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
