After a distanced drive-by, award-conferring and other piecemeal milestones, the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) Class of 2020 culminated its graduation with an official diploma ceremony today — pandemic style.
It happened on the morning of July 8, days after NJ Gov. Phil Murphy allowed for outdoor gatherings of up to 500. In a live-streamed split session, allowing two on-site ceremony tickets per student, the class of 235 graduates was back to the orginal graduation venue back at their alma mater.
It was an unprecedented, historic RFH graduation …
Pomp and Circumstance played faintly under the RFH tower photo online. An opening ceremony began — twice. There were the usual songs and speeches — each session a bit different and abbreviated, not skimped.
Sitting distanced on the field, a few grads at a time approached an outdoor stage where school officials sat and stood, distanced, those manning the diploma table masked. There were no customary handshakes with diplomas. The unmasked grads, one at a time, six feet apart, picked up diplomas themselves, as their names were called. They smiled and stood a flash second for a photo. And off they went. Graduates.
