On the second year without Memorial Day parades in the Rumson-Fair Haven area, it’s a good time to remember a classic parading look of the past.
Yes, it rained on any weekend parades or cookout plans. And with skies clearing on Memorial Day, we focus back to the summer of 1955 when the quad truck was new, longtime member Ray Bennett tells us. There was some proud parade posing of the Fair Haven Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary in front of the truck, all decked out in what used to be the crew’s dress whites, seemingly always worn. The dress whites are still used in parade competitions and such special occasions.
Fair Haven’s parading folks stood out, with most fire trucks donning a typical red and department members marching in standard dress blues, Fair Haven always shone in all white — white trucks, ambulances and outfits from head to toe. The only thing that had color was the tie around necks — a navy blue with white polka dots.
The unique uniform tradition began with the start of the fire company in 1904, Bennett said. We’re not completely sure when this stopped as an every occasion staple, but it was always a stunning sight to see and is not completely gone. Yes, Fair Haven’s Fire Department always marched in step to a familiar, unique drummer.
This may very well have not been a Memorial Day parade, and likely not in Fair Haven, but for those who haven’t seen it before, it gives a grand peek at the idea.
And with this being the Fair Haven Fire Department Auxiliary’s 100th year in existence, the look back is fitting.
Recognize these fire company folks? Know what year? Do tell. Where?
