The Nor’easter kept Rumson Fire Department’s Oceanic Hook and Ladder Fire companies busy responding to many calls for everything from electrical fires to downed wires to flooded homes to trapped cars and downed trees.
With the advent of the football season comes memories of old days when the RFH Band played on with more members, but many may not recall that the football team was small.
Band was big in the 1970s. But, going back more than half a century, like back to the 1930s, when RFH was Rumson High School, the football team appeared small. There was no regional. And the population was, well, small. There were sprawling estates, farms (with a lot of asparagus growing wild) and berries aplenty for picking.
Our annual back-to-school reprise all about those first days of school along with some who, what, when and boogeyman parts … Take this little trip back in time with us to remember Fair Haven’s kindergarten days of yesteryear …
It was a real first and last class act of 1965 — the kindergarten class that was the last to get its first lessons learned in school at what was the Youth Center in Fair Haven. You know. It’s the building that was the police station until it was leveled to make way for a new borough headquarters. The ghosts remain, though. We Fair Haven kindergarteners of the 1960s are pretty sure of it.
Back in the day — OK, waaaaay back in the day — there was a third school in Fair Haven for kindergarten, you see. It was the Youth Center. That was also way before preschool. People now know it better as the Fair Haven Police Station and by its newly adopted name that hasn’t quite caught on yet, and may never for “older” folks still in town — Fair Haven Community Center. Phooey to that. Some things just need to keep a name for nostalgic purposes alone. Besides, the youth part soothes us old codgers.
That and it’s just a matter of what sounds like home to you. For instance, my very nice grandmother, a Matawan native, was pretty hostile about the “new” Aberdeen split and name. Paid it no mind. And if forced, said it with “blah, blah, blah” contempt. Back to the Community Center … There, I said it.

With locals’ summer and school’s start, students’ thoughts naturally turn to warmth and freedom. They start to daydream before they even hit the classroom — especially on a Friday. That’s how it goes in the R-FH area when those beaches become barren and more room is made for the locals to get down to the business of soaking up that locals’ summer partying spirit.

Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) students are winning academically again.
School’s back in session and it’stime for students and teachers to rise, shine and show off a little at Back to School Night.
And kindergarten is the first and best of what was formerly called Open House for kids and parents. First of all, the parents don’t need to tear up and down stairs and speed through hallways to make it to the next class when that bell rings. A little 5K training should be a prerequisite for middle- and high school Open House nights.
They made the Advanced Placement exams grade.
With the first hint of crisp, sunny locals’ summer in the air today, you could say that these RFH guys caught the bug — and soaked it and its sunny vibe right up!
Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School’s (RFH) Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) club has been awarded third place in this year’s statewide No Hate in the Garden State Youth Competition.

It was a beautiful Tuesday. The sun was smiling with a crisp warmth. The air was a snappy fresh. The coffee even tasted especially good.
I remember. Most of us remember where we were on Sept. 11, 2001 at 8:46 a.m.. I know I do. I also remember how everything went from bright, crisp, fragrant and optimistic to dark, dank, acrid and terrifying in one second. I remember how it wasn’t about us observers, storytellers. It was about them — the victims, their loved ones, their message.
For me, a professional observer, a professional storyteller, thankfully close enough, yet far enough, yes, it was so very much about them — painfully so. I wasn’t one of them. I was lucky. I was grateful. I sought the bare honesty in the moments. I watched. They shared. I listened intently. I reported.
I was a journalist living in Fair Haven and covering Middletown for the Independent, Greater Media Newspapers. On what started out as a typical day, those victims of 9/11 and the people of Middletown manning the chaos and being the helpers ended up unwittingly, graciously, lighting a less traveled path for me. For many.
It’s this one storyteller’s perspective.
