Our annual Thanksgiving tribute to the kids’ table … Remember that? Happy Thanksgiving, all! Stay safe. Stay healthy. Enjoy!

It’s Thanksgiving, and, yes, it’s all about giving thanks.

So, the Retro Pic of the Day is an ode to just that.

It’s a snapshot back in time to the 1960s with a sibling duo from Fair Haven — Ben and Kate Hamilton. Ben passed away and Kate had posted this picture on Facebook giving thanks for him. RIP, Ben.

The photo brings back memories of the era the kids’ holiday table. Remember that one?

Old News: Giving Thanks for Missing Spouses, Turkeys, Butts, Beer and a Banshee of a Doctor

To have or have not on Turkey Day …

There were things that were a focal part of tradition on Thanksgiving Day decades ago — in the 1948 Red Bank Register archives, to be exact. Those things are traditions rarely shared, much less championed and advertised now. But, hey, everyone has to live a little … in the past. So, come along with us, again …

That in mind, we take you back to some headlines and ads of that Thanksgiving of 1948. Why? Well, it just seemed like a banner of a microcosm of a year. And then there’s the mind-boggling aspect of the era — what made the top news, the prices, the habits, the must-haves and better-off-withouts. But, who knew?

Old News: Giving Thanks for a 1948 Playground, $1 Butts, $2.50 Dinner, Missing Spouses, a Rat War and Verga’s Midnight Bath

There’s been a lot of hoopla over the new hoops at the revamped McCarter Park in Fair Haven. And it was 76 years ago that the original “playground” seed was sown and there were some pre-Thanksgiving headlines and ads that would make your gravy-sopped, turkey-lovin’ head spin.

DWI Checkpoint Set for Night Before Thanksgiving

The night before Thanksgiving has always been known as the biggest party night of the year. It’s been referred to as Drinksgiving, Blackout Wednesday and Black Wednesday.

Characteristically, people are coming home for the holiday, reuniting and celebrating. And the Monmouth County DWI Task Force is, again, advising designated drivers and ride shares if people choose to partake. The Task Force also has a DWI Checkpoint set for Wednesday night through early Thanksgiving morning.

These DWI checkpoints are publicized in accordance with the law.

Retro Thanksgiving Meal Deals

Reprise! Just because it’s pretty fun to look back with us again at just what it used to cost to shop for the feast … Happy Thanksgiving, all!

Oh, it’s that time — when people were out gobbling up final hour deals on their Thanksgiving meal ingredients.

So, the Retro Pic(s) of the Day take us back to one supermarket of the past, another old standard, and turkey dinner deals of the 1960s or 70s? Guess what year these Red Bank Register ads were published.

Remember Finast? Remember where it was? Well, the store’s turkey day sale involved the bird at 49 cents a pound or a beef roast for 98.

And how about this Foodtown ad? The offer there was the same for the Thanksgiving bird — 49 cents per pound. Though the Foodtown roast was $1.09. And how about those nuts at 39 cents? If only the price of nuts wasn’t so nuts nowadays. Bacon, too. When was the last time you saw bacon sold for 69 cents per 1lb package?

A long time ago, that’s when. For the food prices of yesteryear we give thanks — or a little cry.

How much did you pay per pound for your bird this year?
