In Memoriam: Rumson-Raised RFH ’88 Grad, Delia Tanger, 55

Rumson-raised Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) graduate, Delia Ann Tanger, passed away on April 10 after a long illness. She was 55.

Born on May 25, 1970, in Milwaukee, WI, the family later moved to Nebraska and then to Rumson following the parents’ divorce. In 1978, Marguerite, known to friends and family as Penny, married Russ Dieffenbach. Penny and the girls moved in with Russ, affectionately called “Poppy,” along with his three children, Laura, Russ, and Jim.

“Delia was a 1988 graduate of RFH, where she was known for her infectious laugh, her kind and generous spirit, and her extraordinary ability to connect deeply with others. She was beloved by classmates and teachers alike, a member of the homecoming court, and a standout soccer player.

“Her passion for soccer led her to the University of Maryland, College Park, where she played on the varsity soccer team for one year, a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, and loved working at a local restaurant, EJ’s Landing. True to her ‘seize the day’ spirit, Delia filled her college years with adventure while balancing a full course load and a job. She graduated in 1992 and spent the following year in one of her most cherished places, Lake Placid, NY. During her year in Lake Placid, Delia worked, forged lifelong friendships, and embraced life in the beautiful mountain town. Her love of the mountains continually drew her back. Lake Placid became a second home, where she spent treasured time with her mother, her sister Nicole, her nieces Morgan and Kate Broderick, and her brother-in-law Thomas “Brody” Broderick. That love ultimately led Delia to purchase a second home in Lake Placid, allowing her to share the place she adored with her sons, Tommy and Jack Sheehan …

“At her core, Delia was a connector. She had a rare gift for making people feel seen, welcomed, and valued … Delia’s warmth, curiosity, generosity, and openness defined her life. She leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness, having lived fully, loved deeply, and touched the lives of all who knew her. She will be missed beyond words and remembered always.”

Delia was a fiercely devoted and determined single mother. She balanced a high-powered career, her sons’ schooling and activities, and a wide-reaching circle of friendships across the globe. The family moved between Lake Placid, Battery Park City, and ultimately returned to Delia’s Rumson hometown.

“Delia’s cancer diagnosis in 2022 did not slow her down. She continued to be the primary caregiver to her sons, guiding them through school, friendships, and daily life. She remained professionally active, working as a financial services sales associate at Capgemini in Manhattan, while staying deeply connected with friends in Lake Placid, New York City, and Rumson.
