Happy Birthday & Retro Look at an Iconic Crossing Guard

She was there watching over and crossing kids to school in Fair Haven for more than 25 years. She took her job seriously. She loved and looked after many. No one would dare take a single step into the road without her nod, loud whistle, broad outstretched arms with stop sign palms and her iconic “CROOOOOOSS!” bellow.  She is Dorothy Breckenridge; and she turned 88 on Tuesday.

In Memorium: Services Set for Longtime Fair Havenite Craig Sergeant

“He lived his entire adulthood in three different homes in Fair Haven, NJ, a town he adored and planned never leave.”

That’s what longtime Fair Havenite Craig C. Sergeant’s obituary said about the local man who passed away unexpectedly on March 22 at the age of 71 in New Brunswick.

His life will be celebrated from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27, at Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 28, at the Presbyterian Church at Shrewsbury, 352 Sycamore Avenue, Shrewsbury.

Born in 1946 to Raymond and Dorothy Clarke Sergeant in Red Bank, Craig grew up there and graduated from Red Bank High School in 1964 and Albright College in Pennsylvania in 1968. After college, he settled down in Fair Haven and never planned on leaving.

Remembering Fair Haven Police Patrolman Robert J. Henne

It was three years ago today that Fair Haven lost Patrolman Robert Henne. The loss of the friendly, compassionate cop was a devastating one.

We, at Rumson-Fair Haven Retrospect, again offer our profound condolences to his loving family and many colleagues and friends. 

In memory of Robert, we are re-running our tribute to him that was originally published after his funeral and final call on March 31, 2015.

Celebrating Dr. Seuss in Fair Haven Schools

The Fair Haven school district’s week-long celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday was more fun than a Cat in the Hat.
Each year the March 2 birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, is remembered throughout the U.S. with the Read Across America event. This year’s was held Feb. 26 through March 2 when students at Viola L. Sickles and Knollwood schools were treated to a week filled with reading-based fun and discovery.

Today would have marked the 89th birthday of Fair Haven’s Frank Leslie Sr., owner of the iconic Whistle Stop. In honor of that, we are sharing this piece originally posted on July 20, 2016. Happy Birthday, Mr. Leslie! Thanks for the many smiles and simple good times!
