A Sunday accident in Rumson that downed utility poles, caused a power outage and injured two people is under investigation, Rumson police said in a released statement.
The accident, at East River and Blackpoint roads, happened on Sunday, Aug. 17, at 5:05 p.m., the release said. Police were dispatched to the scene of the “single-car, serious motor vehicle accident” at the intersection.
Upon officers’ arrival, “they observed a 2022 Ford Explorer that had been traveling north on East River Road when it veered into the southbound lane. The vehicle broke through a utility pole and continued northbound, colliding with and damaging another utility pole,” the release said.
It added that the Explorer was occupied by five people. Two of them were transported to Riverview Medical Center, because they complained about pain.
The intersection remained closed until 7 a.m. today, Aug. 19, after JCP&L crews replaced the two utility poles. The downed poles affected roughly eight residents who lost power which has since been restored, the release added.
Rumson Fire Department, Rumson EMS, Fair Haven and Little Silver police departments assisted at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.
