In Memoriam: Fair Haven-Raised RFH Grad, Volunteer, RCDS Teacher, Margy White Hughes, 77

Former longtime Fair Havenite, Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) graduate, volunteer, and Rumson Country Day School teacher, Margaret “Margy” White Hughes, passed away peacefully on July 23.  She was 77.

Born in New York City to Patricia and Paul White, Margy’s family moved to Fair Haven shortly after her birth, and that’s where she was raised. A Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) graduate, she studied at Mount Holyoke College.

“At a party just before starting college, Margy met Kevin Hughes, a student at Dartmouth College, who would later become her husband. He wrote her a letter just after she arrived as a freshman on the Mount Holyoke campus, invited her to a dance, and they were together ever after. After a few years teaching in New England, Margy and Kevin settled back in
Fair Haven to raise their two children.

“During that time, Margy devoted herself to many volunteer causes notably the Junior League of Monmouth County where she was honored as Junior Leaguer of the Year, and St. George’s-by-the-River Episcopal Church where she served in many roles from Canterbury Fair chairwoman to warden.

“Later, she would return to her real calling — the classroom. Margy taught literature and language arts at Rumson Country Day School for over 20 years until her retirement in 2011.

“Margy and Kevin enjoyed spending time in the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire skiing and hiking and eventually retired to New Hampshire where she lived until recently.

“Margy was an avid and accomplished needlepointer and knitter. Her beautiful sweaters and hats live on as the gifts she gave to family and friends and as the donations she made to
newborns at local hospitals.”
