It’s not all about the game when it comes to RFH’s football games. Games have always been a very entertaining full-on production, featuring a big halftime show. And, back in the day, that classic RFH-RBC rivalry game always one of the showiest, most unique halftimes of all high schools. They featured, twirlers, color guard, marching bands, cheerleaders and the one and only RFH Drill Team. All encompassed the entertainment that championed many wins. How could it not? It was and is all about the RFH winning spirit. Go Dawgs!
Remember? That halftime show back in the day, or at least more than a couple of decades ago, included, as it does now, the marching band, cheerleaders and color guard.
While the color guard of present day includes the twirling of colored flags, batons and rifles, it is a performance component of the RFH Marching Band. In the past what the color guard does now with a few students was done in at least two different teams.
The twirling and marching of the rifle bearers during halftime was done by the RFH Drill Team, specifically. The team was rather large. Twirling of batons and colored flags fell separately under the umbrella of the RFH Twirl Team. Though, some fiery baton twirling was often involved. There was no dance, only cheerleaders, who did gymnastic-type routines to accompany the cheers. There was foot stomping, clapping, pyramids done in sweaters, kilt skirts and saddle shoes with knee socks. But, no, there was no kind of dancing involved in this fancy footwork of a cheering show. Imagine that — if you can.
And the whole lot of those spirited entertainers? Well, most will tell you now that they loved every minute of it, but remember most that they froze their patooties off!
So, the Retro Pic(s) of the Day offer a glimpse back to the late 1970s with a look at a frozen halftime featuring the RFH Drill Team and Twirl Team. Oh, and there’s some Color Guard in there, too.
Anyone remember which teacher led the girls on the Drill Team? How about twirling? Who remembers a good cheer?
