Lightning struck once in Rumson on Friday and sparked a roof fire.

“On Aug 7 at 6:58pm, Oceanic Hook & Ladder Fire Co. and Rumson Fire Co., of the Rumson Volunteer Fire Department, were dispatched to a residence on Avenue of Two Rivers for a house on fire,” a social media post from the fire department said. “Assistant Fire Chief Mike Trivett arrived on scene and advised fire burning through the roof of the residence.”

Lightning apparently struck a cupola on the roof, which set it on fire, the post added. A cupola is a structure on top of a building’s roof that sits atop a roof, like a dome or square, that is a vent of sorts or an architectural lookout that lets light in.

Both Rumson Fire Company and Oceanic Hook and Ladder arrived at the scene within minutes and the fire was quickly extinguished.

Sea Bright FD’s ladder assisted with roof operations. Fire companies from Little Silver, Fair Haven, Tinton Falls and Middletown also assisted. Rumson and Fair Haven’s EMS squads stood by and assisted with rehab. The Rumson and Monmouth County Fire Marshal’s office handled the fire investigation.
