In Memoriam: Red Bank-Raised Longtime Shrewsbury Resident, Jennie Rose Barberio, 98

Red Bank-raised longtime Shrewsbury resident Jennie Rose Barberio passed away at home on June 17. She was 98.

Raised in Red Bank, she spent her early married life in there before moving to Shrewsbury in 1955.

“As a Shrewsbury resident, she was active in the community, and until recent health issues, she led a happily vibrant and independent life. She was an active congregant of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church of Padua in Red Bank, where she was baptized and married. The daughter of Peter and Theresa DePonte, Italian immigrants who made their lives in and raised their family in Red Bank, NJ, Jennie was the last remaining
child of Peter DePonte.”

Jennie was predeceased by: her husband, Samuel Barberio, in 1983; her sisters, Josie and Rachel; and her brother, Tony.

She is survived by: her son, Stephen Barberio (Suzanne), of Naples, FL; her daughter, Linda Hammell (Herb), of Brick; six grandchildren, Jesse, Kevin, Lisa, Michael, Luke and Jason; and seven great grandchildren, soon to be 8.  

Friends and family are invited to visit on Tues., June 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 22, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in Red Bank. Jennie will be interred next to her husband, Samuel, at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Middletown.
