Once upon a time, the time-in-a-bottle concept was encapsulated on film. Black-and-white film. Dog-eared, creased, faded photos of moments captured.

Retro RFH Singers’ Song
It’s that time of the year when the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School Tower Singers sing — in concert. The Tower Singers are singing this year, of course. There will be the usual high school winter concert. But, their first gig this year will be in touring fashion to the town next door, Red Bank, on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. at Garmany.

It’s the eve of elections.
Political season has been in full swing; and things in Fair Haven’s Borough Council campaigning have been quite cordial. In fact, the four candidates debated in a very diplomatic, respectful way. And three have answered questionnaires with excellent, well-thought-out answers to some very detailed questions about Fair Haven and critical issues. Some bi-partisan kudos and pats on the back we also given in the process.

These candidates have taken the silly out of silly season and given residents cause to believe that all is fair in this political haven.
But, let’s take the focus off local politics of today for the evening and step back in time to the 1970s and politics as it was with RFH students and teachers.

A Halloween reprise to honor the season of the ghost …
Scary season has set in. People in the Rumson-Fair Haven area aren’t just out raking leaves, either. They’re haunting up their homes, crafting costumes and getting into the spirit. So, why not add a little extra retro spooking from RFH students of the past?
BOO … who or what? It was all in the haunt for RFHers back in the 1970s. They started getting the Halloween party going early on and ended up with a pretty festive feast of ghouls on the grounds of the high school and, yes, beyond.

Some moments are meant for just lounging … like the persistent foul fall weather of the past few days. There was a place for that for juniors at RFH back in the day.

A reprise in honor of girls’ soccer season at RFH …
Yes, soccer season has kicked in. And there are and have been girls teams at RFH since 1984. But, that was not always the case …
When Rumson-Fair Haven Retrospect shared a photo of the boys’ team from back in the late 1970s, RFH grads challenged all to remember who the first girl was to play on the boys’ team.

Retro RFH Football Players
Call them players. It’s all about keeping in step with the high school game. And the RFH Football Team played on …
So did the band. Both players of a different kind. Playing to the same tune — the game. But school spirit and team player strength doesn’t always come in numbers. With high school football season on the horizon, memories come to mind of the old days when the RFH Band played on and in step with many more field-marching members than these days. The football team the band was playing about? Not so much. There was a time when the RFH football team was small — smaller than the band that trumpeted the team.
Band was big and so was a big band era decades ago, for that matter. In fact, going back more than half a century, like back to the 1930s, when RFH was Rumson High School, the football team was minuscule by comparison. There was no regional in the high school name. And the population was, well, low. There were sprawling estates, farms (with a lot of asparagus growing wild) and berries aplenty for picking.

It’s been a steamy summer. One hot Fair Haven summer event was a short-lived one for this seasonal reason, because it was, let’s say, too hot to handle. That would be the summer campout. It’s been moved to the fall.

Summer is in full swing down by the river, heat waves, storms and all! And a big part of summering in the Rumson-Fair Haven area is all about hanging out down by the river — on the dock, on a little strip of sand, or sailing away with your River Rats.

Back in the summer of ’65 … the heat was on in Fair Haven, and some pint-sized bathing beauties were set to walk the walk, if the suit and the bathing cap fit. In the spirit of the season, call them little firecrackers. Celebrity neighborhood sparklers. Whatever the name, they were set for a good, simple backyard game. This one was easy — the suited up line-up. On cue, they struck the pose and gave a big “Cheese!”

It’s officially summertime, and the livin’ is … adventurous for many RFH students. Most are known to hit the beach, clubs or public, in Sea Bright. And some look for a little adventure in venturing away from familiar, iconic turf, and onto another great Jersey adventure, so to speak.
