Within an hour of Monmouth University officials sending out an emergency notification at roughly 10 p.m. telling all on campus a man was seen on campus with a gun and to stay indoors and “await further instructions,” it was announced that the suspect had been apprehended.

However, police, the university spokesperson said in a Facebook post, requested that the lockdown be maintained while an investigation and search for evidence were conducted.

As of 11:50 p.m., all were advised via texts and the Facebook notice that while the evidence search was still in progress and shelter was in place on the the north campus, “all non-resident students in academic buildings may leave campus.”

There were scant details on the Facebook posts about the nature of the gunman incident. However, according to an app.com report, students said they had gotten texts from university officials advising that there was a shooting.

Some students had reportedly been approached by the gunman and dialed 911.

Several messages were sent out offering students updates, the report said.

The first message, posted on the university’s Facebook page, said:

“This is an emergency notification from the Monmouth University Police Department. An incident has taken place, man seen with a gun, requiring you to immediately Shelter in Place if you are on campus.

“Please stay indoors and await further instructions. You will be advised of what actions to take. For further information, please contact the University webpage or call the Emergency/Weather Hotline at 732-263-5900.

“Do NOT call the University Police at 732-571-4444 unless you need an immediate police response or are reporting an emergency. You will be advised when the situation is clear.”
