Memorial Day parades and ceremonies start the day on Monday, an hour apart, in Rumson and Fair Haven.

Fair Haven kicks off the day with a 9 a.m. parade starting at Knollwood School and traveling down Hance Road to River and on to the Fair Haven Firehouse for a brief stop and remembrance ceremony. From the firehouse, the parade continues to Memorial Park at the corner of River and Fair Haven roads.

At Memorial Park, officials and veterans will speak and there will be music by elementary school students.

A special honor will be bestowed upon veteran Oscar Hille, a former B-17 pilot for the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Then it’s on to Rumson, where the parade will begin at 10 a.m.

It starts at Blackpoint Road and travels down East River Road to Victory Park.

Once at Victory Park, there will be a ceremony.

“The Borough anticipates having many community groups participate, including the Senior Citizens Club, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub scouts, Brownie and Daisy troops, representatives from Rumson Recreation, the RFHRHS band and Forrestdale band, novelty cars, local public safety groups, and more,” according to a borough announcement.

“This year we are honored to have Rumson resident Brigadier General Richard Bolton as our keynote speaker, and Father Michael Manning from Holy Cross Church will deliver the Invocation and Benediction,” Mayor John Ekdahl said.

Rumson Boy Scout Troop 201 will form the Color Guard and Forrestdale student MacKenzie Doherty will sing the National Anthem. The ceremony will conclude with the placing of the Memorial Wreaths at the three Rumson Memorials:  World War I, World War II, and the Memorial for combat since WWII.

Taps will be played by Rumson resident and Regis High School junior Owen Doherty. Father Manning will offer a closing benediction.
