In Memorium: RFH Grad Carol Halligan Shaffery, 60

The Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) Class of ’78 will be setting yet another place at its reunion memorial table.

Messages of condolence flooded the class’s reunion Facebook page as news of the sudden death of classmate Carol Halligan Shaffery hit on Tuesday.

Carol, according to her obituary, “passed away unexpectedly at home in Belford (section of Middletown) on Saturday, June 13.” She was 60.

“Carol was caring, smart, funny, and loyal, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.”

Born in Red Bank, Carol was raised in Rumson. After graduating from RFH, Carol earned her associate’s degree from Brookdale Community College.

She had been working for Middletown public schools as a crossing guard at the time of her passing and “cherished the children she saw each day,” her obituary said.

She was predeceased by her father, Harold J. Halligan Sr.

Carol is survived by: her husband, Joseph Shaffery and her beloved dog, Archie; her mother, Carolyn R. Halligan, Pocono Lake, PA and Port St. Lucie, FL; brothers Harold J. Halligan and his partner Suzanne, of Highlands, Robert E. Halligan and his wife Ann, of Rumson, Thomas E. Halligan and his wife Barbara, of Pocono Lake, PA, and Paul J. Halligan and his wife Jeanine, of Atlantic Highlands; and many nieces and nephews.
