You’ve heard it before — each year. We’ll say it again …
It’s Mother’s Day.
And, we at Rumson-Fair Haven Retrospect are thinking, the day should not just be one during which kids dutifully pay attention to the woman who … pretty much, well, twisted her heart up and spit it out to ride a Big Wheel at 100 miles per hour with no helmet. But, we digress.
We’re thinking that the day is not really just for all that Hallmark and social media jazz — though, it is somewhat important jazz. The day should be more about moms celebrating one another, especially to learn a little bit about one another’s roots in a tight-knit community such as the Rumson-Fair Haven area. Because, it does take this sort of village … if you let it. Embrace it. Like they did.
There are so many women in this area who served as the mortar in the in the brick foundation that is this community now. It goes back many generations. We are thankful for those women of all different motherly types — yes, different. Each unique and special in her own way. Each contributing in her own way. Each leaving her indelible fingerprint on many here, through the generations.
You see, the strong community foundation that brought us all here is not about anyone’s income figure and a few overused disingenuous promotional phrases — prime real estate value, curb appeal, flipping potential and the rest of the lingo concocted to make that sale.
The sale was made long ago and the value was tucked away in the hearts of some of these moms who were here when it all started, caring for one another through their community.
It’s about lifeblood — the lifeblood of, in this case, matriarchs who have bequested a legacy of true love.
They put the coffee on long ago. Who’s bringing the crumb cake? Yes, crumb cake. When it comes to community, you can splurge a little to keep it sweet and real.

A pickleball tournament dedicated to the memory of former longtime Fair Havenite U.S. Army Pfc. Jamie Riley, who was killed in an accident while training, will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Fair Haven Fields. See the poster below for details:
And at noon on Saturday, the Fair Haven PTA HarvestFest gets started at Knollwood School. It runs until 4 p.m. with a host of activities, treats, displays and contests.
To cap off Saturday evening, the Fair Haven PBA is hosting its annual Steak Dinner starting at 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Fair Haven Road. See details in the below poster:
And on Sunday, from 9 a.m to 3 p.m., the 20th annual Fair Haven Fire Fire Police & Auxiliary Car Show kicks into gear. The event is free to spectators. There’s music, trophies and plenty of cool classic cars to see. See details below:

UPDATE: Since this afternoon, Tavolo in Fair Haven had its electricity restored and was up and running for business. Those without power are still invited to charge devices and peruse Wifi there.
Many homes in Fair Haven are still without electricity. Borough officials have announced that residents are welcome to go to the library to cool off and/or charge electronics. Keep checking Facebook posts by officials.
Rumson police have asked that people keep JCP&L apprised of continuing outages and NOT to call police headquarters or borough hall to report them or ask for updates on electricity restoration.
This afternoon, police said that 500 households in Rumson were without power. First Energy Partners’ trucks will be arriving from PA and OH to assist in restoration with JCP&L.
“The current priority is to be sure that the Borough is safe and that the wires that are down are not powered,” police said. “We will post additional information on Rumson Police Dept’s Facebook page and on our website, as we receive it. You can also follow JCPL’s Outage Map on their website. http://outages.firstenergycorp.com/nj.html“
With JCP&L reporting more than 100,000 customers in Monmouth County waking up in the dark and to carnage of what looked like a demonic twister, but was a brief wind and rain storm blast, Rumson-Fair Haven area people are still reporting outages.

Today is Father’s Day.
And, we at Rumson-Fair Haven Retrospect are of the mind that the day is really about much more than flipping a burger and patting a good ol’ dad on the back.
It’s bigger than that. It goes way beyond your own dad’s back yard and a grilling or two.
Growing up in a small-town niche like the Rumson-Fair Haven area carries with it that family tie feeling. Some of us were fortunate enough to have great dads. Some not.
But, what we all somehow did and still do have is a strong kinship to the dads of our towns. Even if we just recall a look, a bellowing chide or a chuckle over some stupid kid thing we did, we remember the dads with whom we grew up.
Now, many of those kids are dads, too, and living where their dads raised them. Perhaps, or likely, finding themselves bellowing the same chidings, trying to impart the same wisdom.
So many of these men were volunteers we saw all over town, characters whose nuances or sayings we remember, or that one poor patient guy who ended up being the poor soul to pick us up when we were stupid enough to get caught hurling eggs and toilet paper on Mischief Night — or something equally as dumb.
Yes, we do and should memorialize our own dads. Believe me, I, for one, am still looking for that money tree my dad told me was in the back yard and that gal named Dumb Dori whom he said I emulated when lacking “street smarts” to a pathetic degree.
Yet, I also vividly remember the calm, “I’m going to kill those idiots” smile on my friend Stephanie’s dad when he picked us up at the police station after following through on a really dumb dare. Then there was the “To tell you the truth, my friend, I don’t know” quote that consistently came out of Daryl’s dad’s mouth as he shook his head in wonderment over our mangled teen logic.
There were those dads for all of us — each leaving his own patriarchal imprint in our juvenile minds. For them we are grateful — for raising us here, for coming together to protect and nurture us and for offering a communal scolding or 100, for loving all their village’s children.
They were part of this community’s foundation — everyone’s founding fathers.
Our Retro Pic (or video) of the Day honors the area’s dads of those days for those reasons and so many more.
We don’t have nearly enough photos to encapsulate all the love and all of the dads, but this is a sufficient sampling to get the message across.
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads in the community who have been there for us and given us lessons and words to live by!

Friday’s pounding rain and Saturday’s forecast of more wet weather has put the kibosh or at least hold on a couple of events scheduled for Fair Haven.
