Prosecutor: Area Man Arrested on Attempted Murder Charge

A Monmouth County man has been arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder and related weapons possession in connection with an incident during which a man was assaulted with a brick and hospitalized, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Lori Linskey announced on Wednesday.

Eduardo Martinez, 51, of Asbury Park has been charged with the offenses.

The case background …

Shortly before 2:45 a.m. on Tuesday, an Asbury Park police officer was patrol when he spotted an adult male lying prone on the steps of the Jersey Shore Adult Day Care building on the 600 block of Main Street, according to the preliminary investigation.

Upon making contact, the officer noted that the male, a 68-year-old Ocean County resident, was bleeding heavily from the head and unable to speak. The victim was rushed to a local hospital, where he received emergency treatment for severe head injuries.

A joint investigation into the apparent attack was then launched by the Asbury Park Police Department and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. As a result, police were able to identify Martinez, and he was found and taken into custody without incident, pending a first appearance and detention hearing to take place in Monmouth County Superior Court.

Anyone with information about this matter is asked to contact Detective Christopher Guy of the Prosecutor’s Office at 732-431-7160 or Asbury Park Police Department Detective Lemar Whittaker at 732-774-1300.
