Memorial Set for RFH Grad Bill Caldwell, 58

As the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) Class of ’78 prepares for its 40th reunion, one more place has been set at the In Memorium table — Bill Caldwell’s.

Known in high school as Bill, Wilbur and Billy, the surfer with an enduring love of animals, family, friends and the ocean passed away peacefully “into a world of endless sun and surf surrounded by his loved ones” on July 20. He fought a long, tenacious battle with pancreatic cancer to which he finally succumbed at 58.

News of Bill’s passing hit hard in the RFH community. Social media was flooded with fond remembrances, photos and thanks for great memories. The tributes continue.

Bill will be remembered at a service on Tuesday, July 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank. At 7:30 p.m., there will be a ceremony. And in September, a surfer’s paddle out will honor his memory.

Born William Mason Caldwell, Bill was raised in Fair Haven and graduated from RFH. Known as an avid surfer, snowboarder and skateboarder and a talented woodworker, Bill traveled the word enjoying water sports and the company of friends and family.

He received a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Monmouth University and retired in 2015 from a 30-year career in sales at the Asbury Park Press.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Clean Ocean Action and Surfrider Foundation.

RIP, Bill. You are remembered.
