Longtime Fair Havenite Larry Curchin’s loved ones summed up the sentiment of his passing on April 10 by ending his obituary with a thought to remember him by: “When you see a motorcycle go by one day, with the rider loving every minute of it, you will still know that Larry’s wonderful, passionate spirit lives on.”

Retro Rumson High Class of 1935 Pic

Our reflections this week of the pain and pride that exudes — sometimes in the most peculiar pronouncements — from students at class picture time have so far taken us back to a couple of classic Rumson and Fair Haven elementary school group shots from the 1970s.

Now, in honor of the upcoming 100th birthday of likely the only living member of the Rumson High School Class of ’35, here’s a glimpse back to those times and that tiny high school class.

Retro Fair Haven Centenarian

It’s a pretty well-known fact by now that Fair Haven’s Ken Curchin turned 100 on April 19.

The centenarian who’s favorite mantra is “Never quit!” led what he called a simple life enriched by family and attaining his dream of becoming a pilot when the odds were against him. After helping construct the Alcan Highway in Alaska during World War II, Ken Curchin ended up flying a B-17 Bomber in the war.
