Transition Day: Sickles to Knollwood

They hopped onto their bicycles. They boarded the “big red trolley.” Third graders from Fair Haven’s Viola L. Sickles School set out for the school they will attend in the fall as fourth graders — Knollwood. It is a milestone celebrated every year for many years now. It’s Transition Day.

And, this year, it was held on June 13. Transition Day 2016 began with a song- and memory-filled Parent Show organized by Sickles School Vocal Music Teacher Vince Mottern and the third grade staff. It was followed by celebrations with families in nearby McCarter Park.

Then came the time for the trek to Knollwood. The third graders began their journey from Sickles School escorted by eighth grade peer leaders, Sickles and Knollwood School teachers, and members of the district administration – including incoming Superintendent Sean McNeil.

Parents and supporters with balloons and posters lined the route and cheered as the students passed.

Arriving at Knollwood School, the third graders were directed by the eighth grade peer leaders and staff members into the all-purpose-room where they were greeted by fourth graders. They were treated to a musical performance by glee club, band, and orchestra members, led by music teachers Mel Chayette, Karen Hauge, and Sara Marino, as well as a presentation about Knollwood School student life created by educational systems coordinator Chris Aviles.

The incoming fourth grade class also received an official welcome from Knollwood School Principal Amy Romano.

“There are lots of terrific things happening here at Knollwood School that you will soon be a part of,” said Romano. “Together we will grow physically, academically, and socially.

“Most of you will even be much taller than me when you graduate from eighth grade!”

The event concluded with a tour of the school and instructional workshops.
