Retro Rumson High Class of 1935 Pic

Our reflections this week of the pain and pride that exudes — sometimes in the most peculiar pronouncements — from students at class picture time have so far taken us back to a couple of classic Rumson and Fair Haven elementary school group shots from the 1970s.

Now, in honor of the upcoming 100th birthday of likely the only living member of the Rumson High School Class of ’35, here’s a glimpse back to those times and that tiny high school class.

The birthday girl, will will turn 100 over the weekend on Nov. 5, is in the third row far right of this shot apparently taken on the front steps of what is now RFH. She is Doris Pomphrey Robinson.

This graduating class posed in full cap and gown regalia. Hmmm. Was the shot taken on graduation day or was this a dress-up pose?

Either way, it’s a classic class picture. Picture this: What sort of outfits do you think they were wearing under the gowns? What was the dress code for school in 1935? For women specifically?

Whatever the answers, we wish Doris a very happy celebration of her 100 years! There’s still time to send her a card. Check this link for the address.

Thanks to the Pomphrey Robinson family for providing this classic photo to RFH and us!
