Well, if a sunny Friday morning on the Shrewsbury River is any indication of what’s to come over this Fourth of July weekend, it’s all about celebrating some sunny days along with the birth of our nation.
According to the National Weather Service, the only exception to the good weekend weather case may be Saturday, as forecasters forecast some heavy rain and a bit of stormy weather. But, as for the rest of the holiday time, all’s sunny.
Happy Independence Day weekend, all! Enjoy and stay safe!
A former Asbury Park police officer, who has been listed as a fugitive from justice since he failed to appear for his criminal trial last week, is in federal custody after being captured without incident this morning in North Carolina, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced on Wednesday.
When summer hits in the Rumson-Fair Haven area, teens tend to flock to the Sea Bright beach clubs … the river … the public beach (yes) … Donovan’s … or they hit the road and set out for a great adventure, albeit a sweaty one on some long lines to a big ride, a log flume, a dip in a crowded wading pool or something else that veers away, like a preppy style train wreck, from the R-FH area summer norm.
Well, the Sea Bright beaches are filled with RFHers for the summer.
It’s the start of seasonal fun and antics for RFH students on vacation or even on their last summer hurrah together before college.
So, the Retro Pic of the Day offers a peek back at some simple summer fun on the beach somewhere in Sea Bright, no doubt, with RFH buddies in the late 1970s, possibly the summer of ’80.
These guys thought it would be fun to make a cheerleader-style pyramid at the water’s edge. Remember those? And what resulted was what usually did. The antics and clowning around turned into a laugh fest and balancing act.
Wonder who fell first! Guesses, anyone?
This classic summer snapshot back in time comes from Rumsonite Paul Hughes’ photo collection. No one’s sure who took it, but there are a lot of familiar faces here.
This is a repeat Retro Pic of the Day from June of 2016, but it’s a classic worth a second run, just in case you missed it last time …
Eighth graders in the Rumson-Fair Haven area have graduated.
Photos are popping up all over social media. And these crews of grade school cronies seem to have a panache we eighth graders of the 1970s lacked. There they all are … posing, arms wrapped around one another, sporting stylish clothes, tans and toothy grins.
Well, the rain didn’t hold out for Fair Haven’s Knollwood School Class of 2017, but, by the looks of things, it didn’t dampen the graduates’ spirits Monday night.
The graduation is and always has been indoors. But, a gaggle of guys and girls from the class gathered after the ceremony for a traditional photo down at Fair Haven Dock and a few others at the ol’ homesteads of grads, captured by mom Jenny Costello.
She said it was raining on the dock, but the grads persevered all in the name of that classic milestone snapshot … and a few more.

It’s sunset at the riverfront in Fair Haven. A sea of anchored sailboats cast a shadow on the Navesink River at low tide. The sound of the river lapping onto the shore is rhythmic, soothing. The site of a solitary row ashore is a sign that it’s time to take it all in and exhale a content sigh that this is home.
